DETAILS for Level I: Front Position, southern NJ, March 2012

Enjoy a few days of spring at the Jersey shore before the crowds come! And experience some great thai massage instruction at the same time!

On the first Saturday, we will focus on the feet and legs of the traditional Front Position, emphasizing good body mechanics. On Sunday we continue with the lower body, working the legs and hips with great stretches, again working with good body mechanics and variations to use.

You get time off to  practice during the week, and then the next Saturday we finish the lower body, moving into inversions and some big stretches that thai massage is known for. Then we work with the upper body, including the hara (abdomen), chest, arms, neck, head and face. On Sunday, we finish the upper body movements, concluding with some Sitting Position to finish a 90-minute comprehensive session.

Instructor and Class Format

Rose Griscom follows the ITM and Old Medicine Hospital protocol, has been teaching Thai massage for over 17 years, and specializes in sharing this work with a wide-range of students. She originally studied with Arthur Lambert at ITM-USA in Florida, and then with Chongkol Setthakorn at ITM in Chiang Mai, Thailand. Rose spent 3 years assisting Arthur, and then took over ITM-USA when Arthur moved to Thailand. She trains therapists at top spas around the country, leads workshops in the NJ/PA area, and has a private practice in southern NJ. Her personal practice includes vipassana meditation and chi kung.

Class begins with the traditional Om Namo chant, ringing of the bells, and warm-up movements. Teaching is devoted to clear, thorough demonstrations, with the students being led through the techniques with the instructor's direct supervision. Each class includes a textbook. Videos are available for sale.

Be prepared to work and be worked on. Dress in loose comfortable clothing and have clean feet. Try not to arrive hurried and harried, but allow enough time to slip into the timed timelessness that this work involves. Eat lightly before class, as many of the movements compress the abdomen. Try to be well-rested and alert and receptive.

Classes are approved for continuing education credits by the NCBTMB (#152830) and THAI (#1064).
